What Not To Do During Pregnancy?
Pregnancy is a time of joy and anticipation when the whole family eagerly awaits the arrival of a little member of the family. Certain precautions need to be taken so that the pregnancy develops smoothly and a healthy baby is born. There are many things not to do during pregnancy as follows.
Quit smoking as soon as you decide to have a baby. Do not visit pubs and places where there is a probability or cigarette smoke being present as passive smoking is equally harmful. Beware of fumes from paint. Some cleaning chemicals give out toxic fumes so do not use them. Your cooking appliances must be free from carbon monoxide emission as it is poisonous.
Do not use hair dye or color during pregnancy as they are not safe. Read the labels of the cosmetics you use like cream, shampoo and eye makeup carefully. Ensure that they are safe for use by pregnant women. Consult your doctor if you have any doubts. Do not take any medicine or vaccinations without your doctor’s permission as all medicines are not safe during pregnancy. X-ray imaging should not be done unless the doctor advises it.
Many modern day gadgets emit radiation and electromagnetic rays and can be harmful for your baby. Limit the use of cell phones and computers. Avoid electric blankets and use those which have synthetic or natural fibre. The water you use for your bath should not be too hot and you should not soak in a hot tub. Do not visit a sauna as high heat is risky for the developing baby.
Vigorous or jerky exercises should never be done. Do not lift heavy weights. Even lifting a bucket full of water is dangerous. Sexual intercourse, especially during the first and last trimester should be avoided. Seek the doctor’s advice. Do not douche either. Try not to stand or sit cross legged for a long time. Stay away from pets as they carry many germs and can cause diseases.
Be cautious in what you eat. Your food must be hygienically prepared and stored. Preferably eat fresh food and do not consume left overs more than a day old even if refrigerated. Do not eat too little for fear of putting on weight. On the other hand, do not eat for two. The foetus is too small to warrant that much food.
Raw eggs and raw or under cooked meat like sushi may carry salmonella so avoid them. Heat all frozen food very well before consuming it. Some spices like cinnamon and cloves should be used in moderation.
Unpasteurized milk products and soft cheeses should be avoided. Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Do not eat papaya in early pregnancy. Limit intake of caffeine to about two cups and avoid alcohol altogether. Eat healthy and keep fast food only for occasional indulgence.
