What Causes Peeling Fingernails?
Human nails are made of a number of layers of keratin, a form of protein. These layers are attached amongst themselves in such a way that they form a single strong sheet. Sometimes the layers tend to separate or peel. This is an indication that your nails need care. Peeling nails may be an early warning of some deficiency in your body or diet.
Peeling of nails may be due to any of the following reasons:
- Exposure of fingernails to extreme weather conditions can be a reason of peeling. The effect is more if there is a sudden change of weather. In cold dry weather the nails get adversely affected. In such conditions the need is to retain their humidity. This can be done by applying nail paint repeatedly and applying moisturiser at least twice a day.
- Protein deficiency can be another reason of nail peeling. You need to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, administration of food supplements will help and hasten the process of healing against peeling.
- It is found that certain drugs have effect on the nails and skin. Due to the side effects of some medicines, moisture in skin and nails is reduced. This results in peeling. If you notice this change it is better to consult your doctor. Applying an extra coating of moisturiser will help.
- Certain skin infections have adverse affect on nail health. If you are suffering from yeast infection you need to be careful about nails. The cream prescribed for skin treatment should be applied on the nails as well.
- Certain chemicals are present in floor or toilet cleaners. Similarly harmful chemicals are also present in medicines used for pest control. While handling these it is necessary to wear gloves, otherwise the nails will get damaged.
- If the nature of your work is such that your hands need to be in water for quite some time, or you need to wash your hands frequently, or you need to be in the swimming pool for a long time, there are possibilities of you damaging your nails. Due to repeated exposure to water the layers will start separating. Unless proper care is taken you are bound to get into trouble. Application of a moisturiser at least two times a day will help. If you remain in a pool for long, apply petroleum jelly before entering the water.
- If you regularly apply acrylic nails, when you try to remove them, because of the adhesive properties of the fixer the layer of your nail will peel off, weakening your nail plate.
- Wrong treatment of nails may play havoc with your nails. Before you decide to go in for consultation for nails problem do check the credentials of the doctor.
