This phase comes with a lots of symptoms but goes unnoticed as it has happens in the prime of woman’s life where she is busy doing duties of wife, mother and managing her career as well.

Hot flashes and night sweats

This is due to changes in the levels of estrogen in the body. The hot flashes can range from being to strong and cause redness and make the women sweat in the upper parts of the body. Night sweats can be bad too as they even drench the clothes and bedding in a short span of time. The best way to cope up with this situation is to dress very lightly and in layers so they can be removed easily the moment the heat flashes set in. Wearing open toed sandals also help to release the heat. Drinking cold water helps too. Working women could carry a portable fan to cool themselves if the problem is very frequent. At nights it’s advisable to wear cotton clothes and sleep on natural sheets. Spare bedding should be always kept ready as sometimes the bedding could be soaked in sweat.

In this phase, although the women are still fertile but the egg release is not certain. Therefore the menstrual cycle is not fixed. The flow too varies from being heavy to light.

Urinary infections could occur

Estrogen is the hormone which takes care of the proper functioning of the vagina and the urinary tract. Fluctuating estrogen could lead to shrinking or weakening of the urinary tract and leakage from the bladder or urinary tract infection. Women are advised to drink lots of water and eat a balanced diet to sail through this period comfortably.

Vaginal dryness and insufficient libido

Dryness in vagina is very common in this phase and this can lead to urinary infection. To avoid this, lubricants can be used during intercourse. For the libido problem help could be sought from doctors or self help books.

Memory loss and mood swings too

The changes in estrogen levels and life style can cause short term memory loss and mood swings too. But the lifestyle of the person also has impact on this. Although this symptom is not common to all but those who experience this should try to keep their mind active and also focus on the activity in hand.

Migraine

There is not any specific treatment available for this but some feel having Vitamin D might be helpful. Peaceful lifestyle and yoga or Bhramari Pranayama practice can definitely help to overcome this problem.

Insomnia

This is related to the night sweat and hot flashes. The same solution applies for this too. Other than that, before bedtime caffeine should be avoided and stimulating activities should be performed.

Hormone replacement therapy is a solution but it’s not 100% safe. There fore many women have resorted to natural treatment like dietary changes, herbal and vitamin supplements and lifestyle changes.
