Dry Flaking Skin On Face
People mostly in the age group of 15 to 35 are more prone to developing facial skin troubles. The most common skin diseases are development of flaky skin in which the skin turns red and often peels off. The causes could include adverse side effects of some medicines or soaps, cosmetics or cosmetic creams. Another common reason for this is over exposure to sunlight, resulting in burning of skin due to ultraviolet rays.
Psoriasis is a medical condition in which your skin becomes red and dry and pieces of dead skin fall off. The cause can be excessively dry skin lacking moisture. This dryness can be caused due to use of certain soaps. Often bar soaps have tendency to dry the skin. Soaps recommended for acne treatment are also a cause of dryness, the reason being that for treatment of acne, oil in the skin has to be dried out. Red and flaky skin can also be caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays present in sunlight. As a result of the exposure, the immune system gets affected, causing harmful effect on skin cells.
The skin of the patient suffering from psoriasis becomes painful and tender. This is associated with swelling. A feeling of warmth may also be present. Finally the facial skin flakes and peels off. Cortisone creams are usually used for treatment of flaking. The underlying principle of treatment is to provide nourishment and keep the skin moisturised. Vitamin A and D are helpful in providing health to skin. Thus it is suggested that some medicated creams containing these vitamins should be applied on the face.
The patient can also take medicines to supplement these vitamins orally. In extreme cases of redness and pain, it is always better to consult your doctor. If there is a fear of development of infection due to this condition, he will put the patient on antibiotics treatment for three to five days. This will reduce the severity of the condition of skin. After this, or along with this, some non-steroidal cream can be applied on the face.
Use of soap which dries the skin should be immediately discontinued. Milder soaps having moisturising effect should be used. Care should be taken to keep the skin clean and moist. The face should be washed twice a day, once before going to bed at night and again after waking up. After washing the face at night, a moisturiser should be applied so that the skin gains its health while you sleep. When going out during the day, even if there is no direct sunlight, sunscreen lotion of at least 15 SPF should be applied.
