Indulging in infidelity or commonly called extra marital affair is such an act which is difficult to digest by the marriage partner. It is such an experience in life to which one cannot ever adjust despite best efforts. There can be a number of reasons due to which a person indulges in such an act. Generally indulging partner goes in for an affair outside marriage not with the aim to hurt the other, but to satisfy their own feeling. Study has revealed that in most of the cases ending in divorce due to an extramarital affair, seldom do those indulging in the affair marry.

When any of the spouses gets the feeling that there is disparity between the two and the other one is superior may be professionally or financially, an inferiority feeling creeps in. Though it is very easy to resolve such issues by discussions but if it is allowed to grow, the effected person tries to find satisfaction outside. This is due to resentment and for no other reason. When such a person is caught indulging in such an act and thrown out he is still satisfied that this is an act of superiority of the other, and does not realise his fault.
Jealousy can be another reason for infidelity. If one of the partners in a marriage become jealous of the other due to some reason which may be genuine or not, he tends to find satisfaction outside. If the wife gets promoted and has to spend more time in office, the husband may house a feeling that she is spending more time outside to avoid or ignore him. Under such circumstances he may try to find satisfaction outside. Similar can be the thought of the wife.
Boredom can also result in infidelity. Boredom is not necessarily with the other partner, it can be with life or with oneself. Due to certain happenings in life a person can become bored with himself and try to find satisfaction outside, just with the object of forgetting himself or people around for some time. Boredom may also creep up in marriage if during long period of married life there is no fun or romance.
Infidelity is normally un-thought act done out of frustration and for fun. It can be compared with act of shop lifting. A person indulging in shop lifting may not be in need of thing he is picking up. It is an act to give thrill of doing something which he is not supposed to do. This can also be compared with the act of destruction to public property done by students as they do not gain anything but get thrills. Since most of those indulging in infidelity are not habitual, they need proper counselling to enable save married lives.
